Faculty Public Presentation (FÖP)

Important Information

  • PhD students are highly recommended to pass the FÖP within the first year of their studies.
  • At least 2 weeks prior to the FÖP date, you have to register by submitting the required documents via e-mail to ssc.wiwi@univie.ac.at (see below for details).
  • If you have any questions or need help, please contact phd.wiwi@univie.ac.at at the beginning of the semester that you wish to have your public presentation.
  • You are encouraged to attend the public presentations of other PhD students. In doing so, you can get a first impression of what will be expected from you. It is also a great way to learn about current research projects at the Doctoral School.

According to the Study Law part of the Statutes of the University of Vienna and the curriculum, the topic of the doctoral thesis has to be approved by the Directorate of Studies within the first year of doctoral study. The approval is based on the research proposal and its public presentation. The public presentation serves a twofold purpose. Firstly, new doctoral students and their research topics are introduced to the Faculty. Secondly, the presentation is supposed to offer all attendants a platform for exchange and feedback.

The public presentation is chaired by the Directorate of Studies and attended by members of the doctoral advisory board of your field. They will provide feedback to the research project and evaluate whether the project meets the scientific standards and if it can be realized successfully in a reasonable timeframe.

The public presentation of the doctoral thesis project is the precondition for the approval of the topic. If your presentation is successful, your topic and the supervisor(s) usually get approved by the Directorate of Studies right after the presentation. If your topic is not approved, you have the possibility to recall your application, adapt your research proposal, and reapply for the approval of your topic.

Alternatively, PhD students in certain tracks are required to present the proposed research topic in a first-year presentation.
