Attention
Thesis submission through HOPLA changed
As of now, the upload of theses for plagiarism check will be done via u:space.
Please go to the “Graduation” section and select "Plagiarism check". You will then be guided through the submission process.
Please note: You can only start the submission process if the topic and supervision of your thesis have already been approved by the SPL.
Important Information
- To complete your dissertation project, you have to hand in your thesis at the StudiesServiceCenter, both in paper and electronically.
- The thesis is presented to two reviewers. Together with your supervisor(s), you can suggest three experts as reviewers. The thesis assessment takes up to 4 months.
- Only if both reviewers submit a positive report on the thesis can you register for the public defense.
Assignment of Reviewers
The doctoral thesis is presented to two reviewers. Together with your supervisor(s), you can suggest three experts as reviewers. The appointment of the reviewers, however, will be done by the Studienpräses (the officer responsible for the implementation of the Study Law).
Reviewers do not need to be from the University of Vienna. On the contrary, it is recommended to propose external reviewers. There is a possibility of getting travel costs of external reviewers refunded. Detailed information can be found on the information sheet of the Studienpräses. Please note that only in special cases can the supervisor be appointed as a reviewer. If this occurs, the second reviewer has to be external.
Thesis Submission
The doctoral thesis has to fulfill certain formal requirements. Please refer to the information sheet.
Please check whether the cover sheet of your doctoral thesis fulfils the formal requirements of the University of Vienna.
- Submit the electronic version via u:space
- Sign the thesis upload confirmation and send it via email to the SSC (ssc.wiwi@univie.ac.at).
- Submit the form "Doctoral thesis submission (SL/D6)".
- NOTE: In case of a blocking request (thesis embargo), please also submit the form "Blockage of the doctoral thesis (SL/W3)".
- Submit the printed version to the SSC (3 copies; hardcover, black).
Review of the Thesis
The reviewers have a maximum of 4 months after the written submission of the thesis to review the thesis and write their report. Only if both reviewers submit a positive report on the thesis can the doctoral candidate register for the public defense.
If a reviewer assesses the thesis negatively, then the thesis is handed to a further reviewer. If he/she also assesses the thesis negatively, the overall result is negative and the thesis has to be revised before it can be handed in again.
